If an apparatus begins to skid, what should the driver/operator do?

When an apparatus begins to skid, turning the steering wheel so that the front wheels face the direction of the skid is the appropriate response. This technique is known as "steering into the skid." By doing this, the driver/operator can regain control of the vehicle because it helps to align the vehicle's tires with the direction of travel. This action allows the rear of the vehicle to catch up to the front, thereby reducing the likelihood of further skidding and promoting stability.

In contrast, slamming on the brakes can exacerbate the situation by shifting weight forward, which may result in a loss of traction. Accelerating while skidding is counterproductive and can increase the speed of the skid, making it harder to regain control. Coasting to a stop might not be effective of a response because it might lead the driver/operator to lose control due to the reduced steering capabilities when the vehicle is not actively maneuvered. Therefore, the most effective and safest approach when dealing with a skid is to turn the steering wheel in the direction of the skid.
